6 Things To Do Before Moving To A New City

Moving can be stressful, but it can be exciting too!

When moving to a new city, all kinds of possibilities await you. You will have the chance to meet new people and make new friends. There might be better job opportunities for you. And you might be able to move into a house that is more attuned to your dreams!

But before you pack your bags and call on the services of a short or long distance moving company, there are a few things you should do before heading to pastures new.

#1: Prepare your home for sale

You might have a new home to move into, but if your current property is on the market for an age, your move will be delayed. So, do what you need to do to impress potential home buyers. Get on top of any noticeable repair jobs. Give your home a good clean inside and out.

Add a fresh lick of paint to your interior and exterior walls. And follow our other tips to prepare your home for sale. When everything is spic and span and impressive to the home buyer, you will be able to sell your house faster and make the move to your new location.

#2: Find ways to make savings in your new life

A new home and a new city can give you a fresh start in all kinds of ways. For the purposes of this point, it can encourage you to make a fresh start with the way you manage your finances. Before you move, consider the ways in which you can make savings in your new home.

You might use the time before your move to research cheaper utility and home insurance companies, for example. Use this calculator to work out the cost of living in your new location, and then find ways to make savings in every aspect of your new life.

#3: Research job opportunities

It might be that you have a job lined up already, as this could be the reason for your move to a new city. But if you don’t, start to look through online job listing sites to research the job opportunities that will be available to you. If you have any contacts in the new city, you might want to speak to them too, as they might be able to help you land a job quickly.

And make a list of local businesses, as it could be worth your while contacting them to inquire about any vacancies that haven’t yet been listed. The sooner you get a new job the better, as you will have the money you need for your daily living, and you will have the opportunity to make new friends.

#4: Research social opportunities

Other than a new workplace, there will be other opportunities for socializing. You might want to consider your hobbies, for example, and research the relevant groups and clubs in your new city. You can do this with a quick Google search, and you should find something that suits you at Meetup.com.

Research those other places where you might meet new people, including local bars, gyms, leisure centers, nightclubs, etc. When you make new friends, it will make moving to a new city easier, so if you are a social butterfly, do your homework before you move away.

#5: De-clutter your belongings

Not only will you save on moving costs if you de-clutter your belongings before you go away, but you will give yourself more space in your new property too. So, spend time going through each room of your house, and sort through your items. For anything you don’t want to keep, don’t just throw them away with the trash.

Donate them to charity instead (if they are in good condition), and sell some of your items online to net yourself some extra cash. When your belongings have been whittled down, you will have less to pack into your boxes. This will save you a lot of stress and time when it gets closer to moving day.

#6: Say your goodbyes

The upside of moving is the opportunity to meet new people. The downside is the fact that you will have to say farewell to certain people in your life. This can be emotionally difficult, but you will leave with fewer regrets if you take the time to say goodbye to them.

Visit people in turn to make individual goodbyes, or use the following tips on throwing a farewell party to have one last night of fun with the people who matter to you the most. And remember that goodbyes don’t need to be forever. Collect everybody’s contact details, and make the effort to stay in touch with them after you have left.

We wish you every success with your move!
