Starting Anew

Owning a home requires a lot of work, money, and effort to maintain.

It is always a work in progress as interior design trends change. You feel you’re behind the times, or just too overwhelmed with life to do anything about it. Starting anew is a lot of work.

Imagine the unthinkable happening to your home.  A flood, storm damage, mold, or a fire. As terrible as all these events are, it also provides you with an opportunity to make changes to the house.  All of these events can cause bad memories but turning a damaged room into something completely different can give you the sense of newness and ability to erase some of the bad memories that were contained in that room.

The first thing you have to do is get help in the clean-up process.

You can reach out to many fire cleanup companies that do more than just clean up fires.  Many have the capacity to clean up from most disasters listed above.  Your insurance company will help cover the costs of having a cleanup company come to your home.

Once that is done, it is time to think about what you want to do to the room and who you may have to hire out as a contractor.  If you don’t personally know a contractor, visit websites such as Home Advisor to review ratings from previous customers.  It is important that you find someone that is reliable, dependent, and has a track record of performing solid work.

Whether you watch a lot of DIY programs on television or have gotten decorating ideas from others, now is the time to put it into action.  There are thousands of online websites that can provide you with design ideas.  Interior ideas that are worth splashing the cash on or Havenly are just a couple to get some pointers to help you get started.  This is your chance to be in command of your room and turn that negative into a positive one.

Decide on Your Wants and Your Needs

You are going to want to have a concrete plan in place before starting and meeting with your contractor.  This will help develop a starting price point. Get a sense of what the color scheme will look like, how much and what kind of furniture you want, deciding on lighting fixtures, and anything else that will bring some pizzazz to your room.  You should have a good idea of the measurements of your room, although your contractor will also do that once he/she arrives.

Room Design

In this part of the operation, you want to map out what the room will look like before starting.  Here is where you may want to meet with an interior designer or someone with decorating knowledge (if you are unsure yourself) to create some rough sketches of the room set up.  Knowing the dimensions of what can and cannot fit in the room would come into play here.

Design Development and Construction

By this stage of the process, your contractor should have a full idea of what the expectations of your room will be.  It is then that floor plans are designed, color schemes are finalized, fabrics chosen, equipment selected, and cost estimates are discussed.  All decisions should be made together and finalized before the project begins.

Once this step is completed, plumbing and/or electrical layouts are completed, and the type of flooring that you want is selected.  Once everything is agreed on, let the work begin. You will also want to get a rough idea on how long the project is expected to take. Then you can plan living arrangements accordingly.

Be Open to Uniqueness

In the midst of a tragic time in your life, something new is about to be created.  This can be an exciting, but anxious time in your life. If you decide to meet with interior designers, you will need to allow their creative side to be on display.  They may push you a bit to think outside the box and really create a style unique to that room, but one that flows with the rest of the house.

Have an open mind, but ultimately, it is your home and your final decision. Build a strong relationship with your interior designer. Then he/she can really get to know you and know your style.  Show that you have some flexibility with allowing their vision to come to fruition.

Unfortunately, fires and floods happen on an all too regular basis.  At the moment, your life is in ruins and you don’t know what to do. Hoping and assuming everyone is alright after the incident, try to find the light at the end of the tunnel.  Your home can be built up again to heights you never thought you could take it.
