Why DIY Repairs Are Usually a Bad Idea

There are often two types of home DIY that people will get involved with.

The first one is DIY interiors such as replacing your wallpaper, painting parts of your home or even just moving around furniture. After all, the term DIY is pretty loose. Most people aren’t going to stop you from performing some kind of decorative change unless you have a history of choosing poor colors and patterns.

The other half of DIY repairs usually involve your utilities. Be it gas, electricity or plumbing, we absolutely do not recommend that you perform these repairs unless you have professional experience. And no, watching a YouTube video, reading a How-To guide or even watching your friend do it will not count.

But that’s probably not enough to convince you, so we’ve written several reasons why you should always leave these DIY repairs to the pros.

You’ll save more money

It might sound strange that paying someone to fix your DIY problems is actually cheaper than doing it yourself, but think of it this way; you’re going to end up paying for your own parts and tools that you probably won’t use again, you’ll pay more for materials because you’re not buying from a wholesaler and you’re probably going to mess something up and need to call in an expert anyway, and they’ll charge more because you’ve caused additional damage.

These costs are all going to add up and it’s going to end up being more expensive than you simply just calling a professional in the first place.

You’ll save more time

It takes time for tools and materials to arrive, it takes time to learn how to perform a repair and it’s going to take time actually doing the repair. All of this will add up and cause more stress and consume more time than you could imagine. However, if you hire a professional to get the work done, then you probably won’t ever have to think about the job and you can simply put your feet up while someone knowledgeable does the job.

The last thing you should be stressing over is an unfinished repair that is taking up valuable hours of your day. Hire a professional or someone knowledgeable and you’ll save plenty of time that could be used more productively.

You probably don’t know what you’re doing

Do you know the difference between a Grundfos multi-stage pump and a Sta-Rite closed coupled pump? If you’re not even sure what those are then you’re likely not qualified to do any plumbing work. Do you understand the dangers of electrical wiring work and the differences between AC and DC current? If not, then you probably shouldn’t ever touch the electrical components of your home.

Knowledge and experience are vital when repairing something, so make sure you know what you’re doing before you even set your hands on those tools. If the only experience you have is from watching someone do it on a video or in person, then don’t underestimate the job and stay clear away before you end up hurting yourself.
